Description
Olde Broom Factory Restaurant in Cedar Falls, IA 125 W 1st St, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Sadly, The Olde Broom Factory is no more.
There are many memories of those who dined and worked there over the years: Dorothy, River Room, Old Bar, Lounge, Upstairs Room. Great views of the river, (eagles fishing in the spring, ice breakup, spring high water,) creaky uneven floors and barn door paintings. If you were particularly lucky, a train might pass over the bridge nearby.
As well as delicious food, the 150 year old solid stone building with massive walls, was full of character. (The only building with the same solid feeling that I have ever been in was her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, known as the Tower of London!) Dorothy Stitt, owner, would greet guests at the door, and often show her ostrich and emu egg art. Her barn-board paintings hung on the walls. She would often come around during dinner and acquaint patrons with her favorites. There were also rooms for events and receptions.
It's unique fixtures were interesting. The place gave you a folksy, easy, kind of feeling, not found in todays frenzied over-franchised world. Food was world class, prepared by an excellent chef. (Graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, who also received a Special Award from the Beef Industry Council.)
A series of misfortunes struck. The building, fell into disrepair, the foreign chef found himself in difficulty with the law. Dorothy had been in declining health in recent years and sold the business to her daughter and son-in-law. The restaurant was closed, and the building subsequently demolished.
This painting, from an old photograph, along with the memories, are all that remain today.
