Description
On the way to Thunder Bay - Lake Superior (Ojibwe Gichigami, or Gitche Gumee as Longfellow called it), largest of the Great Lakes, is a vast body of water. Minnesota's North Shore extends to Ontario providing spectacular scenery like this rocky point on an island. Typical of northern Minnesota and Canada, Jagged rock is the main feature of lakeshores. This scene, of July, shows the light green undergrowth of aspens, birches, and the many berrys that grow there. Black spruce provide a reminder of the harsh winters. While without tides, large waves breaking on the rocks give a coastal feel to the natural lakeshore. The ever present distant fog provides an atmospheric background. The Grand Portage area, long home to native Indian tribes of the Chippewa (Ojibway), was on the route of the voyagers, and is near Isle Royal National Park, Voyager National Park, Grand Portage National Monument, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Northern woodland also called taiga, or boreal forest, has a short cool summer and (a very) long cold winter. It provides outstanding wilderness experience and is enjoyed by many year round. Painting done in gouach opaque watercolor, on recycled (fibrous) card stock. (Commercial License Available)
