Description
Traditional Laker - Common sight on the north shore of Lake Superior, a traditionally designed laker, with pilothouse forward and engine room astern. Lake freighters, or lakers, are large bulk carrier vessels on the Great Lakes of North America. These vessels are called boats, although really large ships. Lakers carry bulk cargoes of materials. The most common cargo on this part of the Great Lakes is taconite (a type of iron ore). The lake is so cold [typically 39 F (4 C)] that it is said the only reason sailors wear life-jackets is to make recovery of the bodies easier. Storms on Lake Superior often produce waves of over 20 feet (6 m). Waves over 30 feet (9 m) have been recorded.
The scene shows typical weather on the lake north of Duluth Minnesota. Fog is also common. (Commercial License Available)
