Artist's Description
Fort Severson - Is a historic barn located north of Carpenter in rural Mitchell County, Iowa.
Built by Nils Severson in 1867, it is built of limestone and mortar of lime & sand from nearby Deer Creek. It is a typical fort of the time with small openings for rifles and larger openings for more powerful guns. An Indian Massacre of settlers and an uprising in Minnesota caused the building of forts across North Iowa, of which only this one remains. There were additional scares, but eventually the Indian threat subsided. It was also used as a stage coach stop. Immigrants looking for land to settle on would temporarily stay here. It is on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Some nearby communities are: McIntire, Mitchell, Orchard, Osage, St. Ansgar, Stacyville, Fertile, Grafton, Hanlontown, Joice, Kensett, Manly, and Northwood Iowa.

Strong color and strokes are used to try to evoke the feeling of the view,...
